About

A measurement standard, held in public.

Brand & Signal is a framework, a benchmarking platform and a research library. It exists to make digital performance measurable as a whole, and to publish the measurements where anyone can check them.

Why it exists

Organizations are told their digital performance is good by the specialists responsible for the parts of it. Brand consultancies report on perception, search vendors on rankings, product teams on conversion, engineering on uptime. Each report can be true while the whole is failing.

Meanwhile the way people find and evaluate organizations has changed. Generative systems now sit between an organization and much of its audience, and they draw on brand clarity, technical delivery, structured data and third-party corroboration at the same time. There was no shared, public standard covering all of it. This is an attempt at one.

Enterprise roots

The framework comes out of decades of senior digital strategy, product, creative and technology work at enterprise scale — including a strategy engagement on T-Mobile.com. That background is offered as depth of origin: it explains why the dimensions are what they are and why they are weighted the way they are.

It is not a claim of endorsement. No organization named in describing this background has endorsed, reviewed or sponsored Brand & Signal, and none is a client of it.

How the framework was developed

  • Dimensions were derived from recurring failure patterns observed across enterprise engagements, not from a literature model.
  • Each dimension had to be scoreable from publicly observable evidence, or it was cut.
  • Criteria were written before any organization was scored, so that the instrument could not be shaped around a desired result.
  • The scale, weighting and evidence sources were published in full at version 1.0 rather than held as proprietary method.
  • The Advisory Council is being formed to challenge all of the above from outside.

Governance ambitions

  • An Advisory Council with real authority over methodology changes and publication decisions.
  • Published change notes for every methodology version, with nothing rescored quietly.
  • A standing corrections process, dated and visible on the studies it affects.
  • Disclosure of any relationship between an evaluator and an evaluated organization, on the study page itself.
  • A permanent rule, above all others: commercial relationships do not change scoring.

How to participate

  • Join the practitioner network to receive methodology drafts and early access to studies.
  • Express interest in the Advisory Council if you can hold the methodology to account.
  • Submit a correction if a published result contains a factual error.
  • Apply the framework in your own work — it is public, and it is meant to be used.
