The framework

Fifteen dimensions of digital performance.

Brand & Signal measures the whole of digital performance on one scale. Seven Brand dimensions govern what an organization means. Eight Signal dimensions govern what can be detected, retrieved and acted on.

Brand Integrity · 7 dimensions

What your brand means.

How clearly your organization communicates who it is, who it serves and why it matters — and the quality of the experience it delivers.

Explore the 7 Brand dimensions

Signal Strength · 8 dimensions

How your brand is found.

How easily people and machines can find, understand and trust your organization — and take the next step.

Each dimension has a permanent page covering its definition, why it matters, what strong looks like, common failures, what we evaluate, how to improve, related dimensions and evidence sources.

01

Signal Gap

Brand Integrity measures the experience at the source. Signal Strength measures whether people and machines can find, understand, trust and act on it. The difference is the Signal Gap.

The diagnostic

The Signal Gap.

Signal Strength minus Brand Integrity. The distance between what is true about an organization and what actually reaches the market — and the machines that now answer for it.

High Signal · Low Brand

Present, but interchangeable

The infrastructure exists and machines can retrieve it. What they retrieve reads like a template: category language, no stated position, nothing a competitor could not also claim.

Diagnosis: Content and positioning gap.

High Brand · Low Signal

Meaningful, but undetectable

The proposition is clear and the experience is credible to a person who arrives. Search engines, AI systems and citation networks cannot reliably reach, parse or attribute it.

Diagnosis: Findability and distribution gap.

Both low

Foundation problem

Neither side supports the other. Isolated fixes tend not to move the score, because the faults capping performance sit upstream of the work being done.

Diagnosis: Rebuild, sequenced by dependency.

Both high · small gap

Target state

Meaning and detectability are moving together, and the distance between the two sides is small enough that neither is holding the other back.

Diagnosis: Maintain through governance.

The two sides are read side by side and never blended into a single composite. The distance between them — the Signal Gap — is itself the finding.

Why Brand & Signal exists

Digital excellence is no longer owned by one discipline.

Brand teams

think about identity.

Designers

think about experience.

Product teams

think about usefulness.

Engineers

think about performance.

Search teams

think about discovery.

AI

adds another layer: can machines understand, trust and recommend you?

Brand & Signal brings these disciplines together into one measurable framework of 15 dimensions.

Why 15 dimensions

Because excellence fails in more than one place.

A beautiful website can be impossible to find.

A search-optimized website can be painful to use.

A useful product can be poorly explained.

A powerful brand can be invisible to AI.

And a highly visible brand can lack the evidence required to be trusted.

That's why Brand & Signal measures the complete digital system.

How the benchmark works

Observe. Score. Compare. Diagnose. Improve.

The same five steps every time, so results are comparable between organizations, sectors and editions.

01

Observe

Collect evidence across the owned experience, search, AI and third-party sources.

02

Score

Evaluate the 15 dimensions using a defined 1–10 scale.

03

Compare

Benchmark against relevant category peers.

04

Diagnose

Identify Brand Integrity strengths, Signal Architecture weaknesses and the Signal Gap.

05

Improve

Create a prioritized Transformation Roadmap.
