Brand Voice
Brand Voice evaluates whether an organization has a stated, defensible answer to three questions — what it does, who it serves, and why a buyer should choose it over the alternative — and whether that answer is present at the points where a decision is actually formed.
Why it matters
- Positioning is the input to every other brand dimension. Messaging, content and experience cannot be coherent downstream of an unresolved proposition.
- Buyers shortlist before they contact. A proposition that is only explained in a sales conversation is absent from the part of the journey that determines whether the conversation happens.
- Language models summarise organizations from public text. An organization that does not state its own position will be described using whatever generic category language surrounds it.
What strong looks like
- The proposition is stated in plain language above the fold on the primary entry pages, not only on an About page.
- The audience is named specifically enough that some readers correctly conclude the offer is not for them.
- Differentiation rests on something verifiable — method, coverage, evidence, constraint — rather than adjectives available to every competitor.
- The same position holds across the site, profiles, listings and third-party descriptions.
Common failures
- Category description in place of a position: stating the industry served rather than the choice being offered.
- Undifferentiated superlatives — leading, trusted, innovative, world-class — carrying the entire claim.
- A proposition that exists in the pitch deck but never appears on the site.
- Multiple competing positions across service lines with no organizing idea above them.
What we evaluate
- Presence and prominence of an explicit value proposition on primary entry pages.
- Specificity of the stated audience and the stated problem.
- Whether differentiation claims are substantiated or merely asserted.
- Consistency of the position across owned properties and third-party descriptions.
- How the organization is characterised in AI-generated summaries relative to its own stated position.
How to improve
- Write the proposition as a single sentence naming the audience, the problem and the mechanism, then test whether a competitor could sign it.
- Move the proposition to the top of the highest-traffic entry pages, in text rather than in imagery.
- Replace each unsupported superlative with a specific, checkable fact.
- Audit third-party listings and profiles and align them to the same wording.
Standards it inherits from
Owned by Brand strategy and verbal identity. This dimension is not invented here — it states an existing discipline standard as something observable and scorable.

Scoring anchors
- 3
- Generic superlatives carry the claim; the same copy would fit any competitor.
- 5
- A stated position exists, but it is inconsistently expressed and thinly evidenced.
- 7
- A specific, substantiated position, expressed in a consistent voice across surfaces.
- 9
- The position is stated, evidenced and unmistakable — and holds in third-party descriptions.
Illustrative median across published studies: 5.6
How to test it yourself
- Put a competitor's name on your homepage copy — does anything break?
- Underline every superlative and check each against a citable fact.
- Ask an AI assistant to describe your company and compare it to your stated position.
- Check whether your directory and profile descriptions use the same wording.
Questions
- Can voice really be scored objectively?
- The observable parts can: whether a position is stated, whether claims are substantiated, and whether the same position holds across surfaces and in machine-generated summaries.
Evidence
This dimension is scored from the following publicly observable sources. Where a source is unavailable for an organization, the limitation is recorded with the result rather than inferred around.
- Homepage, primary service and category pages
- About and company pages
- Third-party directory and marketplace profiles
- AI assistant summaries of the organization
